Burrowing owls, /Athene cunicularia/ The Institute for Bird Populations is preparing for a statewide burrowing owl survey. The last survey was done 13 years ago. Using volunteers primarily from Audubon Society chapters and other birding groups, 700 5 km by 5 km blocks were surveyed. This provided a statewide population estimate, which has been used for burrowing owl conservation efforts. Current population estimates are desperately needed. A random sampling of census blocks in the 11 distinct regions will be selected. The sample will be augmented with blocks known by locals to host burrowing owls. The Institute will provide maps, data forms and detailed instructions. Burrowing owl The breeding territories will be surveyed over two years starting this May. Surveyors will identify suitable habitat within each block then thoroughly search the habitat for burrowing owls. Each block is estimated to take 6.5 hours to cover. The survey times are between dawn and 10 am and 4 pm to dusk. The Burrowing Owl Preservation Society has volunteered to be a local area coordinator. This is a tremendous effort! Everyone who loves burrowing owls has an opportunity make a significant contribution by participating in this survey. Please call to volunteer to survey or help with the coordination.
